Starting from 6 April 2026, This new UK government initiative requires affected taxpayers to replace annual paper-based reporting with digital record-keeping and quarterly electronic submissions to HMRC.
Who Must Comply?
You are legally required to join if your annual qualifying income (gross income from self-employment and/or property) exceeds the following thresholds based on your most recent Self Assessment tax return:
- 6 April 2026: Income over £50,000 (based on 2024/25 tax year).
- 6 April 2027: Income over £30,000 (based on 2025/26 tax year).
- 6 April 2028: Income over £20,000 (based on 2026/27 tax year).
Key Requirements
- Digital Records: You must create and store all income and expense records digitally using HMRC-compatible software. Manual data entry via spreadsheets without digital linking is prohibited.
- Quarterly Updates: Instead of one annual return, you must submit four quarterly updates summarizing your income and expenses to HMRC.
- Final Declaration: At the end of the tax year, you must submit an MTD tax return (Final Declaration) via your software to confirm your total tax position.
Software and Compliance
You must use MTD-compatible software that can connect directly to HMRC’s systems via API to submit data. This includes maintaining “digital links” where data transfers electronically without manual retyping. While you can sign up voluntarily, those meeting the income thresholds must enroll by the specified dates to avoid penalties under the new MTD penalty regime.
